Ahmedabad: A software company in Gota that provides digital management services to schools has accused its former employee of manipulating critical data in its software systems before leaving the organisation. The employee had access to the company’s enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM) software, databases, source code, and server administration systems while he was working there, according to a complaint filed with the Cybercrime police on Thursday. After the company decided to terminate his services following complaints regarding his conduct and work performance, he allegedly threatened colleagues and managers with consequences, police said. The alleged tampering came to light when schools using the company’s software reported discrepancies in billing rates. In one instance, the per-student rate reflected in invoices was found to be significantly higher than the approved amount. Similar complaints were received from other clients.A technical review conducted by the company allegedly revealed that student billing rates across multiple client accounts had been altered and were increasing automatically by around 10% at regular intervals. Further checks found that service validity dates, annual maintenance contract (AMC) records and other client-related data had also been modified.According to the complaint, activity logs, database records, and system audit trails pointed to changes originating from a computer system assigned to the former employee. The company alleged that the modifications were made with the intention of creating confusion among clients, affecting business operations and tarnishing the firm’s image.Police said the suspect used authorised access to enter the company’s software, altering database records across multiple client accounts to make the changes look like genuine updates. The complainant submitted employment records, confidentiality agreements, warning emails, system activity logs, SQL server logs and screenshots from software development tools as evidence. Police registered a case of cheating and forgery under BNS and Information Technology Act.
