Kanpur: Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Kidwai Nagar police arrested the one more accused, Vineet Kumar Rai, in the fake degrees and marksheets case on Thursday from Gaushala Chauraha. The police have arrested five persons so far.Vineet Rai previously worked at Radha Govind University in Jharkhand, Accurate University in Gurugram and Himalayan Itanagar University in Arunachal Pradesh. Currently, he was at Monard University in Hapur and was absconding since the arrest of the other accused.Police traced his location with the help of surveillance. Conversations between Vineet and Shailendra Kumar were also recorded which revealed that financial transactions also took place between the two.Rai was presented before the court on Thursday, from where he was sent to jail.Financial transactions worth Rs 7.53 lakh took place between Rai and Shailendra Kumar Ojha in 2025. With Rai’s arrest, the police traced the gang’s links to Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Arunachal Pradesh, and have launched a search for three other staff members linked to the universities there.Kidwai Nagar police sent Shailendra Kumar Ojha, Nagesh Mani Tripathi, Jogendra and Ashwani Kumar Singh to jail on Feb 18 on charges of making degrees and marksheets in exchange for money. It was found that Mayank Bhardwaj from Chhatarpur, Manish alias Ravi from Hyderabad, Vineet Kumar Rai from Ghaziabad, Shekhu and Shubham Dubey from Bhopal were also linked to the accused.DCP South Deependranath Chaudhary said that Shailendra Ojha had connections with employees of several universities.
