BHILWARA: The late-afternoon heat hung over the fields of Suwaniya in Chittorgarh’s Gangrar area as Bhagwan Lal Kalbeliya (55) sat with a few acquaintances, passing time and talking, Monday. He had been living there with Tara, a 35-year-old woman he was in a live-in relationship with, away from his ancestral village of Bheru Singh Ji Ka Kheda in the same district.By night, the calm broke. Bhagwan’s first wife, Ladu (51), arrived at the field along with his second wife, Bhomli (50), and Bhomli’s 22-year-old son, Anil. They pressed Bhagwan to return to his ancestral village and live with them, said police. Voices rose, the argument sharpened, and insults cut through the air as the confrontation turned volatile.In a sudden, irreversible act, Bhagwan allegedly pulled out the gun he had with him and fired. The shot struck Bhomli. She collapsed in the field and died on the spot, said Tulsiram Prajapat, the Gangrar police SHO.Anil, stunned into fury by his mother’s death, grabbed a stick lying nearby and charged at Bhagwan, said police. He allegedly beat Bhagwan until the man lay motionless. Bhagwan died there in the same field minutes after the shooting, the SHO said.Tara tried to step between them, but Anil turned on her as well, striking her with the stick, said police. Injured, she was taken to a hospital in Chittorgarh; as her condition worsened, she was referred to Udaipur for further treatment.Police and forensic teams reached the crime scene after receiving information about the killings. Evidence was collected from the field, and the bodies of both Bhomli and Bhagwan were sent for postmortem, conducted by a medical board at the district hospital. After the examinations, the bodies were handed over to family members for cremation. An additional police force was deployed in the area to prevent further unrest.Chittorgarh SP Dharmendra Singh said Bhagwan’s first wife Ladu and son Anil were detained for questioning as investigators worked to piece together the events that turned a family dispute into a double murder. Singh said Bhagwan had two daughters from his first wife Ladu and two sons and two daughters from his second wife Bhomli.
