Bengaluru: A doctor lost over Rs 22 lakh in a matrimonial fraud after being lured into a fake relationship with an alleged ophthalmologist based in Berlin through a popular matchmaking platform. The Richards Town resident told police she registered on the matrimonial portal on Dec 20, 2025 and soon got a response from a person identifying himself as Dr Ganesh Barman. Claiming to be an ophthalmologist, he said he was divorced and living in Germany, and his seven-year-old daughter was studying in a boarding school. While sharing his number, Barman said he was the only son of his England-based parents.
Barman claimed he planned to relocate to India by Feb to set up a hospital in Delhi. The two communicated through WhatsApp calls and chats. Over time, he gained the woman doctor’s trust by speaking about marriage plans and his ambitious healthcare project in India. The fraud unfolded when Barman claimed his international bank account had suddenly become non-functional while he was transferring funds to agents in India for the hospital project. He then requested the doctor to help by transferring money from her bank account to various agents. Believing his claims, the woman transferred large sums from her account from Jan 9-24. As she did not have sufficient money, she asked her brother-in-law, who transferred additional amounts from his account. After she transferred over Rs 22.2 lakh, the fraudster kept asking more money. She then suspected something fishy and realised she was being deceived. A case was registered under Information Technology Act and BNS Section 318 (cheating) at East Cyber Crime police station.
