Bengaluru: A fake email attempted to mislead candidates appearing for fireman’s recruitment at an army unit by falsely claiming the exam was postponed. The message was sent from a fake email ID resembling the official one to stop candidates from attending the recruitment, held from Feb 13–15. Authorities issued a clarification to all applicants and sought police action to trace the sender. An officer from No 515 Army Base Workshop, Ulsoor, filed a complaint with east cybercrime police Wednesday, stating recruitment for fireman’s post was being held at the ministry of defence (army), 515 Army Base Workshop. Admit cards were sent to candidates whose applications were accepted. In addition, an email communication was sent to candidates on Jan 12 from 515abw2026rect1@gmail.com ID, which is the authentic email ID for recruitment used by the unit.A civil defence employee of the unit received information on Feb 7 from a candidate regarding postponement of recruitment dates, citing a technical reason. The employee was shocked and immediately checked the email. An officer said it was an obvious attempt to mislead candidates and ensure they do not attend the recruitment process or to ensure only some candidates attend it and secure jobs.A senior police officer said a case has been registered under Information Technology Act and they are probing to find out who created the email ID and how he got the list of candidates who applied for the post.
