Madikeri: Under the joint auspices of the district administration, food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department, district consumer commission and district consumer information center, Kushalnagar, World Consumer Day was celebrated at the Govt Degree College in the town’s Junior College premises on Thursday.Assistant commissioner Nitin Chakki said that everyone in the society is a consumer in one way or another and everyone should be aware of consumer rights. He said that people should be careful while buying any product.Senior advocate MA Niranjan said people should know about consumer rights and duties.Gaurammanni, a member of District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, said that consumers should know about their rights, adding they should also fulfil their duties.“While buying ingredients, the weight and quality should be ensured. It is mandatory to get a receipt while buying any item,” he said, adding that the District Consumer Redressal Commission will conduct a quick inquiry into the complaint and provide redress.AA Changappa, president of District Consumer Information Center, Kushalnagar, said that consumer clubs have been formed in 52 high schools in the district and awareness about consumer rights is being created. Digital markets are also powerful in today’s fast-paced life, and consumers should also be aware of this, he said.M Bheemaraya, deputy director of food department, said comprehensive protection of consumer interests is the most important thing, and awareness about consumer rights is being created to prevent consumers from being cheated.An exhibition was organised by the department of law and metrology. Dr Venkatesh Prasanna, principal of Govt First Grade College; Rama, food department assistant director; professor Naveen Kumar and food inspectors were present.
