Kanpur: The shehnai fell silent at Bulakipur village in Etawah’s Basrehar area late Friday when a 23-year-old bride drew the line at marrying an inebriated groom. What began as whispers around 2 am, just as the jaimaal was to be exchanged, erupted into a brawl that left two injured from both sides, police said.The baraat of Himanshu, 28, from Gyaarampur, Jaswantnagar, had arrived Thursday night in full celebration, only to unravel when the bride learned of the groom’s intoxication and called the wedding off on the spot.Family members and relatives attempted to persuade her, but she stood firm on her decision. Angered by the refusal, members of the groom’s side created a commotion, with the dispute escalating into a brawl.In the scuffle, Balbir Singh from the bride’s side and Anuj from the groom’s side were injured.On receiving information, people pacified the situation and got the injured admitted to the CHC.Station in-charge Saurabh Singh said police reached the spot after getting information late at night. On Friday morning, they arrived at a compromise and gave written statements, saying they would not take legal action. The groom returned without the bride.
