Mangaluru: MLC Ivan D’Souza said that efforts are being made to open branches of cardiac and cancer centres at the Wenlock District Hospital in the city. The MLC was speaking after inspecting 2.7 acres of land belonging to the hospital in the city on Tuesday. After visiting the site along with officials from the health department, D’Souza said that plans are already prepared to construct a paramedical college, nursing college, and staff quarters at the site. Since the land identified for the purpose is located in the city, a request will be made with the govt to open cardiac and cancer hospitals too. The MLC said he already spoke to health and family welfare minister Dinesh Gundu Rao in this regard.The govt has already sanctioned funds for the construction of an OPD block at the Wenlock District Hospital. Similarly, out of the Rs 800 crore earmarked in the budget for the development of seven govt hospitals, D’Souza said there is a scope for earmarking Rs 100 crore to the Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru, to construct a paramedical college, nursing college, and staff quarters.The district minister is expected to chair a meeting of the Arogya Raksha Samit on Aug 1. The meeting will discuss and finalise the proposal of building a paramedical college, nursing college, and staff quarters.Superintendent of the Wenlock Hospital, Dr DS Shivaprakash, and DHO Dr HR Thimmaiah, were present.
