Dubai has announced a new initiative to simplify medical visa procedures for international patients as part of efforts to strengthen its position as a global healthcare and medical tourism destination.
The General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA Dubai) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a more integrated healthcare journey for overseas patients, according to a Gulf News report. The agreement aims to streamline services from the medical visa application stage through treatment and post-recovery follow-up.
Officials said the partnership will improve coordination between residency, visa and healthcare services, making it easier for patients travelling to Dubai for medical treatment.
The agreement was signed by Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, and Dr. Alawi Sheikh Ali, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority, at GDRFA Dubai headquarters.
Faster medical visa procedures
Under the partnership, the two entities will work together to simplify medical visa processing and create a smoother experience for patients before, during and after their treatment in Dubai.
The initiative also includes stronger electronic integration between the systems of GDRFA Dubai and DHA to improve service coordination. Authorities said the collaboration will support integration with the health insurance ecosystem and enable members of the Dubai Health Experience network to submit medical visa applications more efficiently for patients travelling from outside the UAE, as reported by Gulf News.
Officials added that the agreement could pave the way for future initiatives, including the introduction of a smart medical visa and additional digital services aimed at improving the patient experience.
Focus on health tourism growth
The partnership will also support international promotion of Dubai’s healthcare sector through the Dubai Health Experience initiative, which showcases the emirate’s medical facilities and services to overseas patients.
Al Marri said the agreement reflects Dubai’s focus on building connected government services that place people at the centre of service delivery.
“This partnership stems from Dubai’s vision of integration, innovation and creating exceptional experiences. We are working to develop a more flexible and seamless ecosystem that connects residency and healthcare services, contributing to Dubai’s global competitiveness in medical tourism,” he said, Gulf News reported.
Dr. Alawi Sheikh Ali said healthcare tourism involves more than treatment and includes accessibility, service quality and ease of procedures.
“Health tourism is an integrated human experience. This agreement supports Dubai’s efforts to strengthen its position as a global destination for healthcare and wellness through an interconnected service model that provides patients with a seamless and integrated journey,” he said.
