New Delhi: University of Delhi awarded degrees to over 1.2 lakh students on Saturday, including its first batch of four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) students graduating this year and 20 former students who were given a special opportunity to complete their courses under a provision introduced as the university entered its centenary year.The degrees were digitally released by Vice President of India and DU chancellor C.P. Radhakrishnan, who attended as the chief guest at the 102nd Convocation. Degrees were conferred on 1,09,003 undergraduate students, 11,362 postgraduate students and 43 FYUP students, including candidates from regular courses, NCWEB and the school of open learning. A total of 734 scholars were awarded PhD degrees. In all, 132 medals and prizes were presented. Addressing the gathering, the Vice President said universities are defined not just by their infrastructure but by the character and values they instil in students, adding that convocation marks “not an ending, but a new beginning.” Vice chancellor Yogesh Singh said, “This country is ours, and we must take care of it,” urging graduates to contribute responsibly to society and the nation.
