Kolkata: A 24-year-old woman from Dum Dum was allegedly assaulted and molested at Nagerbazar on Friday night after she and her male friend objected to a group of youths blocking a busy stretch of Jessore Road.The incident reportedly took place near Kamardanga around 9.40 pm, when the woman and her friend were travelling on a bike from Nagerbazar towards Lake Town. Local sources said four to five youths, allegedly drunk, were arguing in the middle of the road and disrupting traffic.The woman and her friend initially asked them to move aside. When they refused, the woman protested and her friend honked the motorcycle. The youths allegedly became aggressive, forced the two to get off the bike and assaulted them. The woman alleged that she was molested during the attack.According to the complaint, some of the woman’s relatives reached the spot after being informed and tried to intervene, but they too were allegedly attacked. The accused allegedly used the butt of a firearm during the assault.The woman later lodged a complaint at Nagerbazar police station against four persons, alleging assault and molestation. Police said one person has been arrested in connection with the molestation allegation, while the main accused and others named in the complaint are absconding.A senior officer of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate said a case has been registered, witnesses have been questioned and available evidence is being examined to establish the sequence of events. Efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused.
