“First, Manaji attacked her with a bottle and later with a stick. She died on the spot,” Kotagiri police said. After the assault, other family members were informed. The body was moved from the place of the attack to another room and laid on the floor, covered with a cloth. Nearly two hours later, Manaji allegedly used a diya that had been lit near the body, poured the burning oil on her and set her ablaze. Family members quickly intervened and doused the flames. “The legs and neck on the body got burnt,” police said. The murder took place around 10 pm. However, it was only on Saturday morning that Boomavva’s daughter approached the police station and lodged a complaint. Police said Manaji is a rag picker and addicted to alcohol. He has been taken into custody and is being questioned. A case has been registered under section 103 (murder) of the BNS.
