Nagpur: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted nearly 2 kg of high-grade stimulant amphetamine worth around ₹1.55 crore from a Bhopal-Nagpur bus late Friday. Amphetamine is a powerful central nervous system stimulant, said sources.Sources said a 19-year-old student was allegedly carrying the consignment in a shoulder bag and was expected to transport it further to Bengaluru for delivery to another person. He is now in the three-day custody of DRI.As per sources, the youth had first travelled from Delhi to Bhopal before changing buses for Nagpur. During preliminary inquiry, the youth allegedly revealed that he was supposed to board another bus to Bengaluru.Investigators suspect that the youth is working for an interstate drug peddler. Sources further claimed that the substance may have been manufactured in a clandestine laboratory at an undisclosed location in Delhi or Noida. The seizure comes against the backdrop of earlier major amphetamine recoveries in the region. In Aug 2023, DRI had seized three kg of amphetamine-type substance worth over ₹24 crore at Nagpur airport from a passenger arriving from Nairobi via Sharjah. The passenger had concealed the substance inside a hollow metal roller, and investigators subsequently arrested an alleged intended recipient in Delhi. In another operation on Sept 27 this year, DRI seized one kg of amphetamine worth approximately ₹1.05 crore from a woman travelling on the Hazrat Nizamuddin–Bengaluru Rajdhani Express at Nagpur railway station. The latest seizure is now leading the investigators to probe the suspected supply chain, the alleged source of manufacture and the intended recipients in South India.
