Citizens take to the streets in city, demand an impartial and transparent election body

Nagpur: Raising slogans and waving the national flag, members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) took out a Tiranga Rally from Lokmat Chowk to Variety Square on Saturday, demanding the release of party functionaries Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka and raising concerns over alleged electoral irregularities.A heavy police deployment was made along the rally route as protesters marched with the Tricolour, raising slogans in support of their demands.Questioning restrictions on such demonstrations, protester Harish Gurbani said, “Since when has waving the Tiranga become a sin? This is the land of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. This is not the flag of any political party or other country. Revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh and Rajguru sacrificed their lives for the nation and its flag.”The protesters also demanded the resignation of the chief election commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, and repeal of the Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2023, calling for an independent, transparent and impartial Election Commission.Protesters alleged widespread irregularities in the electoral process, including SIR and voter list discrepancies. “During their tenure, question papers have been leaked and votes are being stolen. Three crore people were excluded during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Hearings are now being conducted. Will they stop even these hearings?” one of the protesters questioned. The party also demanded a rollback of the 2024 voter list, accusing the authorities of undermining electoral transparency. Raising slogans throughout the march, protesters called for accountability and protection of democratic rights.
