Srinagar, Oct 03: Ahead of the seasonal arrival of migratory birds in Valley’s wetlands, the Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife Protection Department has advised birdwatchers, wildlife photographers and visitors against sharing exact locations, GPS coordinates or other identifiable details of bird congregations on social media.
The advisory was issued by the Office of the Range Officer, Lakes Range Hokersar, Wetlands Division, Srinagar, in view of the expected arrival of large numbers of migratory birds in the region’s wetlands.
The department said responsible wildlife photography and social-media posts can play an important role in creating awareness about Kashmir’s rich avian diversity and highlighting the ecological significance of its wetlands. However, it cautioned that disclosure of precise locations of bird congregations and sensitive habitats could expose them to poachers, hunters and others engaged in illegal wildlife activities.
Kashmir’s network of wetlands provides vital feeding and resting grounds for migratory birds during their seasonal movements. Large congregations of birds are expected in the wetlands during the coming season.
The department urged wildlife enthusiasts and visitors to exercise caution while documenting sightings and sharing photographs online. It particularly advised against posting photographs or accompanying information that could reveal the precise location of large bird gatherings or other sensitive habitats.
The advisory comes during Wildlife Week, observed from October 2 to 8, which seeks to promote awareness about wildlife conservation and the protection of natural habitats, including Kashmir’s wetlands and their seasonal migratory bird populations.
