The skyrocketing cost of living in Bangalore, India’s Silicon Valley, has once again become a flashpoint for intense debate after a tenant shared a Reddit post on aggressive rental hikes. The individual living in a 2BHK standalone house near the Karthik Nagar metro station, paying 33,000 in rent plus significant maintenance and commercial-rate utility bills, was left reeling after being asked for a mandatory 10% annual increase in rent. This viral post has struck a chord with others.

“I’m staying in a 2BHK standalone house near to 1KM away from Karthik nagar metro station. Current rent is 33K + 2.5K maintenance (fixed). I also end up paying ~ 3K electricity and ~ 3K water because it’s commercial billing,” the tenant wrote on Reddit.

The person added, “Owner is asking for a 10% rent increase every year. Is this normal in Bangalore? What % increase are you guys seeing typically?”

Explaining their situation in detail, the tenant continued, “If I stay here for 2years then rent going to touch 40K in a standalone apartment. Given the IT market how landlords are behaving now? Do they really strict in increasing 10% hike?”

What did social media suggest?

An individual advised, “Not necessarily 10%. Discuss and negotiate each year at the time of renewal. I renewed this year with zero increase. I started at 27k in 2023. Currently at 30.6k.” Another expressed, “Going for a five per cent increase this time. 10% is not sustainable, move out.”

A third commented, “Depends on the owner. I stayed in a duplex and the owner was really nice. I stayed there for 7 years with a 0% increase in rent.” A fourth wrote, “5% is the norm but learn to negotiate. No house owner will change tenants for a mere 5% hike.”
