Kanpur: District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh on Thursday stepped into the role of an elder brother for Class XII student Ishu Yadav after she and her mother approached him during Janta Darshan seeking financial assistance for her education.Ishu, along with her mother Lalita Yadav, a resident of Awas Vikas, Hanspuram, Naubasta, submitted an application stating that the family was facing severe financial difficulties and was unable to pay school fees for several months. During her interaction with the DM, Ishu expressed a desire to tie a rakhi on his wrist.Honouring her wish, Singh allowed Ishu to tie the rakhi and subsequently took steps to ensure that her education does not suffer. He contacted the school management, following which 50% of her pending fee was waived. The remaining amount, around Rs 14,500, was paid by the DM. He also arranged a bicycle for Ishu to commute to school, which is located around two kilometres from her home, along with other gifts.Lalita told the DM that she lost her husband in 2017 and her two sons, who live separately, do not provide her financial support. She works as a domestic help but was unable to pay the outstanding amount of Ishu’s school fee of around Rs 29,000.Ishu shared her ambition of becoming an IAS officer. She said that after becoming an officer, she would listen to people’s problems and extend help to those in need.Singh encouraged Ishu to work diligently towards her goal and assured her of all possible assistance. He also entrusted deputy collector Jyoti Sharma with the responsibility of mentoring the student. Sharma will guide Ishu in her studies and provide assistance whenever required.There DM also visited government children (girls) shelter home inn Swarup Nagar. The girls tied rakhi at his wrist and he gave them gifts along with a piggy bank for their small savings.
