Patna: Surgical procedures in state’s district hospitals surged sharply between June and Aug 2026, signalling a major boost to the state’s healthcare infrastructure. Official health dept figures show the number of surgeries rising from 2,428 in June to 5,650 in July and 8,209 in Aug.The Aug figure marked a 45.3% increase over July, with 2,559 additional procedures performed. Health officials attributed the rise to better use of existing facilities, continuous monitoring and improved hospital management.Vaishali district hospital topped the state with 651 surgeries in Aug, followed by Patna with 587, Araria with 529, Madhepura with 494 and Bhojpur with 362.The increased activity at district hospitals reflects a growing shift towards localised medical care, reducing pressure on tertiary hospitals in major cities. The health dept has focused on ensuring operation theatres, advanced equipment, specialist doctors and nursing staff are fully utilised.Bihar health minister Nishant Kumar said strengthening primary and secondary healthcare facilities remained a top priority.“Unnecessary referrals are a major concern, and reducing them while strengthening district hospitals is our top priority,” Nishant said. “The rising number of surgeries at district hospitals is highly encouraging. It proves that our efforts to expand local medical infrastructure are yielding concrete results, ensuring that patients receive timely, quality care right in their home districts.”The health dept plans to sustain the momentum through regular monitoring, stronger human resources, specialised surgical services and further infrastructure upgrades at district hospitals across Bihar.
