Bhagalpur: The district administration has stepped up efforts to protect Ganga embankments from further erosion as floodwater entered low-lying areas and soil erosion intensified along the riverbanks.The administration, along with water resources department (WRD) officials and teams from NDRF and SDRF, is carrying out protective and preventive measures at vulnerable stretches. Officials are also monitoring areas facing a potential threat to embankments and other critical structures.Steps are underway to relocate residents of Raghopur, Kharik, Mahadevpur and other diara areas in Naugachia subdivision to safer locations amid incessant rain since Tuesday and a further rise in the Ganga’s water level on Wednesday.WRD teams involved in rescue and embankment repair are maintaining constant surveillance of vulnerable stretches and undertaking protective measures to prevent damage to embankments in the diara areas.The district administration has made arrangements for food and drinking water for flood-affected families and displaced people. It has also initiated steps to set up community kitchens at schools in safer areas to provide meals to those affected by the floods.Relief camps are being arranged at locations as required, said Bhagalpur district magistrate Alankrita Pandey. She said arrangements were also being made to provide healthcare and other essential services at relief camps in strategic locations.The DM urged residents to remain alert, cooperate with rescue teams and report any potential danger to the authorities. Officials have been directed to prioritise the safety of people, property and livestock and ensure necessary assistance to affected families.Pandey, who visited flood-affected areas in Naugachia, also urged people to not pay attention to rumours and rely only on official information. Flood-affected residents are being shifted to safer locations in higher areas, she said.
