Varanasi: A 17-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide at a one stop centre in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district in the early hours of Tuesday after her family reportedly refused to take her back following her repeated elopement with her 22-year-old lover. Police said the family had disowned her after counselling sessions failed to resolve the matter.Azamgarh SP Anil Kumar said the girl had first eloped with the youth last year, following which her family lodged a kidnapping case at Didarganj police station. Police rescued the girl and handed her back to her family, while the accused was arrested and sent to jail. After being released from jail, the youth allegedly contacted the girl again and persuaded her to elope with him. A fresh case was registered, and police once again traced and rescued the girl.Following her rescue, the girl and her family underwent joint counselling. However, the family refused to take her home, citing her repeated decision to elope. As a result, she was accommodated at the one stop centre, the SP said.According to police, CCTV footage showed the girl entering the washroom in the early hours of Tuesday. When she did not come out even after about an hour, the staff became suspicious. They made a hole in the door and found her hanging inside. The staff immediately informed the Sidhari police station. Police reached the spot, took the body into custody, and sent it for a postmortem.Officials suspect the girl may have been distressed after being rejected by her family, though they said all angles of the case are being investigated.
