Director General of Police and Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Sandeep Rai Rathore inaugurated a T-shirt manufacturing unit at Central Prison-I, Puzhal, on Wednesday as part of the Tamil Nadu Prisons Department’s rehabilitation and skill development programme for inmates.

Chennai: Director-general of prisons and correctional services Sandeep Rai Rathore inaugurated a T-shirt manufacturing unit at Central Prison-I, Puzhal, on Wednesday as part of the state prisons department ‘s rehabilitation and skill development programme for inmates.The vocational training unit was established in partnership with Rotary International District 3234 to provide inmates with garment manufacturing skills and improve their employment prospects after their release from prison.Addressing the gathering, Rathore said the state jails housed more than 22,000 inmates across 125 prisons and that vocational training played a key role in preparing them for a lawful livelihood after their release. He said the T-shirt manufacturing unit would provide inmates with commercial garment manufacturing skills and enable them to gain practical work experience during their imprisonment, thereby improving their employability after completing their sentence in jail.
