Coimbatore: The Podanur Train Users Association has urged the Salem division of Southern Railway to establish a new railway line between Podanur and Karur via Chettipalayam, Palladam, Kangeyam and Vellakoil.Pointing out that Chettipalayam and its surrounding areas were major centres for textile units, poultry farms, animal and poultry feed, and agricultural trade, the association said the region lacked a dedicated railway corridor. Speaking on the need for the new track, N Subrmanian, general secretary of the association as well as a member of Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee, said, “Large volumes of goods are being transported to various districts and other states from these units. The proposed rail route will improve freight movement, strengthen industrial connectivity and support economic growth in the region.” He said many multinational companies had set up their warehouses at Chettipalayam. “Currently, traders and regular commuters from Palladam or Chettipalayam must go to Erode to travel to Karur by train. The new track will not only cater to the freight movement but also enhance revenue through passenger footfall.” Pointing out that there was an existing track running between Podanur Junction and Chettipalayam that leads to Pollachi, he said acquiring land for the new line wouldn’t be a complicated matter. He said while the Indian Railways had approved formation of new routes, including Erode-Palani and Madurai-Thoothukudi routes, funds were yet to be allocated for project implementation.
