New Delhi: Delhi Police commissioner Satish Golcha on Saturday rolled out a series of initiatives to strengthen traffic management and enforcement across the capital. As part of the measures, 125 Over-Speed Violation Detection (OSVD) cameras have been installed, extending surveillance to 76 additional road stretches. This expansion builds on the existing network of 125 cameras covering 66 stretches.Special commissioner of police (Traffic) Neeraj Thakur said the enhanced system would enable more objective, comprehensive and effective detection of violations such as overspeeding, lane indiscipline and driving against the flow of traffic, thereby promoting greater compliance and improving road safety. “The system will cover all classes of vehicles, including two-wheelers and three-wheelers,” he said.According to police data, cases of driving against the flow of traffic rose from 99,669 in 2024 to 1,48,520 in 2025, while incidents of dangerous driving increased from 21,824 to 25,827 during the same period. The cameras are programmed to measure the time taken by a vehicle to cross a fixed distance between two virtual lines; vehicles exceeding the prescribed speed are flagged for verification at the control room using digital evidence. An upgraded e-challan system, integrated with the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), will also be rolled out soon, allowing motorists to pay traffic fines instantly through major UPI applications. Police said the system would make challan payments more accessible, convenient and transparent, enabling faster settlements and better transaction tracking. The initiatives align with Delhi Police’s SMART policing framework, which emphasises technology-driven, faceless enforcement to curb traffic violations—a key contributor to road accidents and fatalities. “With the expansion of the camera-based enforcement network, authorities will be better equipped to monitor violations in real time at critical locations and accident-prone stretches,” said additional commissioner of police (Traffic) Vijayanta Goyal Arya. The upgraded system features high-resolution imaging, Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and seamless integration with the e-challan platform, ensuring accurate identification of offending vehicles and prompt issuance of challans. To address congestion caused by unauthorised parking and vehicle breakdowns, Delhi Police have also inducted 76 new cranes. An officer said the additional equipment would enable quicker removal of illegally parked and stranded vehicles, easing bottlenecks and improving traffic flow across the city.Following the launch, the police commissioner interacted with around 450 traffic personnel in a session aimed at providing an open platform to raise grievances, share suggestions and discuss operational challenges. He said the Traffic Police was one of the most visible units of Delhi Police and stressed that its functioning must remain effective and transparent to maintain public confidence.Emphasising road safety as a top priority, Golcha urged personnel to review accident hotspots to identify issues related to road engineering and commuter behaviour. “The intent of prosecution should be to reinforce discipline,” he said.
