Kolkata: The decentralised admission portal for undergraduate degree courses will go live after the first phase of joint entrance decentralised counselling, ensuring students have maximum admission opportunities. A dedicated decentralised admission portal has already been readied by the higher education dept.The West Bengal Joint Entrance Board is set to launch the decentralised portal on Monday to fill the remaining BTech seats. Department officials revealed that after the first phase of decentralised engineering counselling, the portal for degree programmes will become operational. This staggered timeline allows science students to benefit from both procedures. A senior official said, “Our aim is to maximise opportunities for aspirants to secure admission according to their preference. If both counseling processes occurred simultaneously, students interested in both might miss out on one.”A BTech aspirant can participate in the decentralised admission counselling for degree programmes if they are not satisfied with their initial BTech seat allotment.The first phase of the joint entrance decentralised admission process will continue till Sept 18, with officials indicating that the undergraduate degree portal likely start functioning next week.The decentralised admission portal will allow students to select up to 25 choices and receive allotments based on eligibility. However, once a student accepts an option, all other allotments will be automatically canceled — a key feature of the new system. Applicants can also view vacancy details for every college before applying. Earlier, students had to visit individual college websites to participate in decentralised admissions. Meanwhile, individual colleges must prepare their own portals to conduct one or two rounds of decentralised admissions for remaining seats.A senior official added, ‘The new central portal will help colleges curtail extra expenditure, allowing students to access all college options through a single link to secure a final admission spot or change their college or course.’’ Through the centralised portal, candidates receive only a single seat allotment.In contrast, the decentralised process offers multiple allotments based on students’ eligibility, allowing them to choose the right option.
