Surat: A man strangled his mother to death before committing suicide by hanging, police said on Friday.The deceased have been identified as Bhanu Sonani, (63), and Jatin Sonani, (36). They were residents of Rupam Society on Ashwini Kumar Road, police said. The incident came to light when a neighbour visited their home and found Bhanu lying motionless on a bed, while Jatin was hanging. Police were immediately informed and both the bodies were shifted to SMIMER Hospital for post-mortem examination.The post-mortem report revealed that Bhanu died due to strangulation with a wire or thread, while Jatin’s cause of death was confirmed as hanging.During the preliminary investigation, police recovered a suicide note from the house in which Jatin allegedly apologised to his mother. Investigators also learnt that he had reportedly incurred debts of around Rs 45 lakh due to share market losses.Police said Jatin was a bachelor and had been adopted by Bhanu from a relative when he was six months old.DCP (Zone-1) Alok Kumar said, “We came to know about the incident around 10am. Primary investigation suggests that Jatin had incurred heavy losses in the share market. He had incurred the debt in the past also, but family members and relatives had helped him during that time. We have received a suicide note in which he had confessed to have killed his mother and also about his suicide due to the debts. We are also investigating whether there were any other reasons behind the incident.”According to the police, the initial investigation suggests Jatin believed his mother would be left without support after his death and allegedly decided to kill her before taking his own life.
