Surat: History-sheeter Kirti Patel has been arrested by Puna police in connection with a case involving alleged extortion and criminal defamation. A Surat-based builder had lodged a complaint alleging that Patel posted defamatory videos containing obscene language to malign him and his family.Police also booked suspended constable Nayna Baraiya for allegedly instigating the act and sharing Patel’s videos on social media. Following Patel’s arrest, police teams have been dispatched to apprehend Baraiya.Zone-1 DCP Alok Kumar said, “We registered offences against Patel for using obscene language, extortion, criminal intimidation, criminal defamation and criminal conspiracy along with co-accused Baraiya. Patel is accused of accepting Rs 12 lakh from the complainant on the pretext of settling a rape case.”DCP Kumar added, “During the investigation, it also came to our notice that the complainant allegedly paid Rs 3.12 crore to the accused over the past one-and-a-half years. After verifying the facts, we obtained the court’s approval to invoke extortion charges and served notices to both accused. Patel was subsequently arrested from the Saurashtra region.”After being brought to Puna police station following her arrest, Patel allegedly created a ruckus and attempted to level allegations against the police.Patel was previously detained under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act. She has been booked in multiple cases of extortion, defamation and other serious offences in Surat, Ahmedabad and other districts.“As several abusive and defamatory posts were found on her social media accounts, Kapodra and Puna police initiated correspondence with Meta regarding the content. Based on the communication, her Instagram account was blocked. We will continue to monitor her activities and initiate legal action against any abusive or defamatory content targeting individuals. The co-accused in this case will be arrested soon,” the DCP added.
