Kolkata: Senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee on Tuesday urged Calcutta High Court to expedite the hearing of Mamata Banerjee’s election petition challenging CM Suvendu Adhikari’s victory from the Bhowanipore assembly seat in the 2026 polls.“Let Calcutta High Court set a record by deciding an election petition within five years,” Banerjee told Justice Gaurang Kanth.The judge allowed Adhikari four weeks to file his written statement, rejecting his counsel’s request for six weeks. Banerjee opposed the extension, saying prolonged delays in election petitions were a “bad trend”.Advocate Srijib Chakraborty, appearing for another candidate who had contested the same seat, sought to file an application seeking Mamata Banerjee’s disqualification.The matter will be heard after six weeks. Justice Kanth directed all parties to exchange relevant documents within four weeks and asked the registrar general to file an affidavit.
