KALYAN: A two-and-a-half-year-old boy had to undergo surgery after a broken injection needle was allegedly left lodged inside his lower back while he was being administered an anti-rabies vaccine at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s (KDMC) Rukminibai Hospital, triggering allegations of medical negligence.The child, Kavesh Pandey, a resident of the Kaka Dhaba area in Kalyan East, was taken to the civic hospital after he was bitten by a pet dog.According to his parents, Suryabhan and Kajal Pandey, doctors administered an anti-rabies injection, but the needle allegedly broke during the procedure and remained inside the child’s body.The parents said Kajal immediately alerted hospital staff, suspecting that the needle had broken.However, they were allegedly told that the needle had probably fallen on the floor and were advised to take the child home.Soon after returning home, the toddler began crying uncontrollably and complained of severe pain.Alarmed, the family rushed him to Mumbai’s Sion Hospital but claimed they could not receive treatment there.They later admitted him to a private hospital, where an X-ray revealed a broken needle lodged in his lower back.Doctors subsequently performed surgery to remove the needle.“Our child had to suffer because of sheer negligence. We do not want any other innocent child to go through such an ordeal,” the parents told TOI.Following the incident, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) office-bearer Amit Kolekar demanded strict action against the doctors and hospital staff responsible for the alleged negligence.Following incident, health officer Dr Deepa Shukla has ordered enquiry into matter.Dr Shukla told TOI, “I have ordered CMO Rukminibai hospital to make enquiry into allegations of family and submit report and as per findings action will be taken”.
