T’puram: The family of Armyman Rahul Rajeev, 30, who was declared brain dead while undergoing treatment in Thiruvananthapuram, has decided to donate his kidneys, liver, corneas and heart valve.Rahul, son of Rajeev and Sunitha of Kalluvathukkal in Kollam, was serving as an Army officer in Himachal Pradesh and had come home on leave. He passed away around 10pm on Friday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.One of Rahul’s kidneys was transported to another hospital in Thiruvalla through a specially arranged green corridor. The ambulance left Thiruvananthapuram at noon on Saturday and reached Thiruvalla at 1.37pm, covering the long-distance route without interruption through coordination by Kerala Police.The other kidney was donated to a patient undergoing treatment at Govt Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, while the heart valve was donated to a patient at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology.Rahul’s liver was donated to a patient at another private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, while his two corneas were donated to patients at Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), Thiruvananthapuram.Health minister K Muraleedharan expressed his respect and gratitude to Rahul’s family for agreeing to the donation despite their profound grief. He also condoled Rahul’s death and conveyed his solidarity with the bereaved family.The organ donation and allocation process was coordinated under Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO). Rahul had already registered with K-SOTTO as a voluntary posthumous organ donor.
