Mandya: DC Kumara directed officials to initiate strict action against private financiers and microfinance institutions that have been harassing farmers in the name of loan recovery.Chairing a meeting at the deputy commissioner’s office to discuss demands raised by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, he made it clear that the administration will not tolerate intimidation or coercive practices targeting farming community.Kumara stated that the govt issued firm instructions prohibiting private financial institutions from troubling farmers or the public during loan recovery. He warned that any violation of these directions would invite legal action. Referring specifically to microfinance companies regulated by the RBI, he stressed that recovery procedures must strictly adhere to the RBI guidelines. Any instance of high-handedness or breach of lawful limits would result in serious consequences, he cautioned.Addressing agricultural infrastructure concerns, the DC also underlined the importance of providing electricity during morning hours, to facilitate irrigation. He instructed Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) officials to ensure a consistent power supply and to resolve technical issues that hinder daytime distribution of electricity. Supplying power during daylight enables farmers to work safely and reduces risks from snakes and insects, he noted.Kumara also called upon officials to adopt a responsive and empathetic approach towards farmers’ grievances, and urged banking institutions to effectively implement crop loan schemes to sustain agricultural activities and strengthen rural livelihoods. The meeting was attended by Prateek Hegde, joint director, Food and Civil Supplies department.
