Chandigarh: Cyber fraudsters allegedly cheated two city residents out of ₹4 lakh in separate scams involving an unauthorised UPI breach and a fake online customer-care number.The Chandigarh cyber crime police have launched investigations into both complaints, actively tracing the mobile numbers, bank accounts, and digital transaction links used to pull off the frauds.In the first incident, 51-year-old Davinder Singh Rana—a Nayagaon resident working in Sector 26—lost ₹2,43,996 on Sept 8. Between 12.18 PM and 12.38 PM, an unidentified fraudster gained unauthorised access to his PhonePe UPI account and siphoned off the amount across three rapid transactions.In the second case, property dealer Naveen Gupta of Sector 38 lost ₹1,63,500 while trying to cancel a ₹360 food order. After searching Google for Swiggy’s customer support, Gupta called a number listed online, following which the scammer sent him a WhatsApp link to install a malicious APK file.After downloading the app and entering his ATM card details under the guise of processing a refund, Gupta discovered that ₹83,500 and ₹80,000 had been illegally debited from his two Punjab National Bank accounts later that night.
