Varanasi: Kotwali Nagar police arrested an accused of cattle smuggling after an encounter in Ballia district on Friday.During a checking drive on Shivrampur Ghat Road near the Greenfield Expressway, the police received information about the movement of a wanted accused of cow smuggling, Madan Mohan alias Dablu, 27.On seeing a suspect, the police signalled the vehicle to stop but the accused turned the vehicle and attempted to flee towards Kinaram Ghat.The police party chased him. On being surrounded by the police, the suspect got down from the vehicle and fired at the police. In counteraction by the police, the criminal was shot in his right leg.During interrogation it came to light that Madan had cases lodged against him at Narhi police station and was wanted in case of cow smuggling at Fefna police station. A total of 18 cases are registered against him.The injured criminal was admitted to Ballia Sadar Hospital. One country-made pistol .315 bore, a live cartridge, an empty cartridge and a vehicle without number plate found in his possession were seized by police. Further legal action is being carried out.
