Meerut: A judicial magistrate’s court in Amroha has directed police to register an FIR against five officials of a private university near Gajraula in Rajabpur, including the pro-chancellor and registrar, after students alleged they were issued fake degrees and were charged hefty fees.

The order came after Sudarshan Kumar, 27, a resident of Peepli Daud village, and several other students approached the court, stating that they completed a three-year BSc Optometry course (2021-2024) and were awarded degrees in Sept 2024. When they approached the UP Medical Faculty in Lucknow for registration, officials allegedly rejected the documents, stating the course was not recognised, and the certificates were “fake”.

Kumar said that each student was charged around Rs 30,000 as course and degree fees. “When we confronted the university authorities, they misbehaved and threatened us with false cases,” he said, adding that university representatives later visited students’ homes and pressured them to withdraw their complaints.

The students also claimed they had approached local police and senior officials, including the DM and the SP, but “no action was taken”. An FIR was registered on Saturday under BNS sections 318 (4) (cheating) and 351 (criminal intimidation) against registrar Piyush Kumar Pandey, pro-chancellor Rajeev Tyagi and staff members Anil Kumar, Maroof and Faizaan. No official response from the university was available at the time of filing the report.
