Koraput: Special Jail, Jeypore, turned into a wedding venue on Sunday as two undertrials solemnised their marriage in the presence of family members, prison officials and fellow inmates, apart from Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati.Thirty-year-old groom Nrusingha Khamari and 27-year-old bride, whose identity has been withheld, have been lodged in jail for the past three months in connection with a financial fraud case. Despite their incarceration, the couple’s long-standing commitment culminated in marriage after prison authorities facilitated the ceremony following due legal procedures.Jail superintendent Santosh Patnaik said the couple had been engaged before they were sent to jail and had repeatedly expressed their wish to get married. “After receiving their request, we obtained the necessary permissions from the competent authorities. Once approval was granted, arrangements were made to conduct the marriage inside the jail in accordance with Hindu traditions,” he said.Jeypore MLA Bahinipati conveyed his blessings to the newlyweds. “Every individual deserves an opportunity to rebuild life with hope and dignity. This marriage is a reminder that humanity and compassion should remain at the centre of our justice system. I wish the couple a peaceful and responsible future,” Bahinipati said.The prison premises wore a festive look for the occasion, with the jail decorated for the ceremony. Following the ceremony, a community feast was organised.Prison officials said the event reflected the correctional system’s emphasis on rehabilitation and preserving the social rights of inmates wherever legally permissible while their legal proceedings will continue.
