Kolkata: Three weeks after two suspects escaped a raid by jumping into the Hooghly and swimming away, Kolkata Police on Sunday arrested them and two others in connection with a Rs 1.5 crore theft at a CESC godown in Cossipore. Mohammad Rubel, Ibrahim Sheikh, Ashraf Morol and Jamirul Sheikh were nabbed in Duttapukur after cops cut off their escape routes towards the river. Cops also arrested Shambhunath Sau of Galiff Street, and stolen goods were recovered from him.The case relates to the theft of cables, copper items and machinery from a warehouse on Jheel Road. Officers tracked the suspects to Jyoti Colony in the first week of March. As cops moved in, four men fled through the narrow alleys, throwing water drums and chairs in their path to slow the officers. Two of the suspects then jumped into the Hooghly. Though cops deployed divers to nab them, the duo managed to escape. “The gang used boats to steal copper items from warehouses off the river bank,” an officer said.
