Nagpur: A 58-year-old contract worker died after an iron rack collapsed on him during annual overhaul work at Koradi thermal power station on Tuesday night.Maruti Meshram, a resident of Arjuni Morgaon tehsil of Gondia district, suffered serious injuries in the boiler section of 660 MW Unit 10 while a coil was being extracted. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to a hospital.The unit had been shut for maintenance and repair. The principal contractor had assigned the job to another company, which further gave a petty contract to Sampat Reddy. Gate passes of all contract workers were issued through the principal contractor.After the accident, an alleged delay in the arrival of an ambulance forced workers to rush Meshram in a private vehicle. Koradi police have started an inquiry. The incident has raised questions over safety arrangements for contract labourers at the plant.
