Traffic police monitor night-time traffic on a busy Indian city road as two-wheeler riders navigate glare from oncoming headlights, highlighting road safety concerns.

Mangaluru: A delegation from the Ullal zone committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) construction workers’ wing submitted a memorandum to Mangaluru city traffic police and the senior regional transport officer (RTO), urging strict action against the use of high-intensity LED and excessively bright headlights on vehicles. The delegation said the widespread use of powerful LED headlights causes severe glare for drivers of oncoming vehicles at night, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Construction Workers District Treasurer Yogesh Jeppinamogaru said that earlier, vehicle headlights had appropriate shade or cover mechanisms to prevent light from shining directly into the eyes of oncoming drivers. However, the practice of fitting vehicles with excessively bright LED lights and using high beams indiscriminately has become common. He said the intense glare can temporarily blind motorists, creating dangerous conditions on roads during night-time travel. The delegation pointed out that thousands of workers, including construction labourers, commute home on two-wheelers after work, often at night. Excessive glare from oncoming vehicles poses a serious threat to their safety, they said.In the memorandum, the union urged authorities to restrict the use of high-intensity LED lights, curb unnecessary use of high beams, and carry out inspections to check headlight fittings and beam alignment.Yogesh said officials assured the delegation that the issue would be reviewed and appropriate action taken.Ullal taluk Construction Workers Association president Janardhan Kuthar, secretary Chandrahas Pilar, treasurer Rohidas Batnagar, vice-presidents Ramachandra Pajir and others were present.
