Ahmedabad: A police constable posted at Naroda police station was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and ramming his Creta into an Activa carrying a 40-year-old man and his 15-year-old niece in Chandkheda.The accident occurred near Sneh Plaza on Monday around 11.45pm. According to the complaint, the Creta, allegedly driven by Gaurang Dave, hit the two-wheeler from behind, throwing both riders onto the road. The teenager suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.People who gathered at the spot identified the Creta driver as a constable. Witnesses said he appeared intoxicated and was unable to maintain his balance after the crash.Traffic police were called to the spot and took Dave into custody. Police said he continued to behave incoherently after being taken to the police vehicle. The L-Division Traffic Police later registered a case and arrested him.Inspector (L-Division) Sunita Patel confirmed, “Constable Gaurang Dave has been arrested in connection with the accident. His blood samples have been collected and sent for analysis to ascertain the level of alcohol in his blood.”Police said the medical and forensic reports would be included in the investigation to establish whether Dave was driving under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred. Police are also examining the circumstances of the crash and recording statements from witnesses.Police said they will collect the teenager’s medical records as part of the investigation.Witnesses alleged that Dave threatened people at the spot even after police arrived and claimed that any complaint against him would ultimately work in his favour. They said people detained him and prevented him from leaving until traffic police reached the spot.
