Ranchi: Congress workers briefly clashed with the police on Tuesday during their protest outside the office of state chief electoral officer (CEO) in Dhurwa seeking the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.Congress and Youth Congress workers marched to the CEO’s office from the old Vidhan Sabha complex raising slogans against the CEC and alleging irregularities in the SIR exercise. Some of them tried to break through the barricades as police stopped the entourage, leading to a brief confrontation. When they failed to reach the office, agitators blackened the official name board outside the premises.Former Union minister Subodh Kant Sahay, who took part in the march, said serious questions have arisen over the functioning of CEC and demanded his resignation. Jharkhand Youth Congress president Kumar Gaurav said, “The SIR exercise is rigged in the interest of a particular party. The protest is to demand a fair probe into alleged irregularities in SIR and fixing accountability on CEC. The EC’s conduct in recent times has eroded public confidence. We demand complete transparency in the SIR exercise.”
