Malda: Congress Lok Sabha member Isha Khan Choudhury was stopped outside Malda College on Wednesday after a violent clash broke out between two student unions at the main gate. While Congress-backed Chhatra Parishad (CP) arrived to submit a deputation, supporters of BJP-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) resisted them. The brawl left several injured, though Choudhury escaped unhurt and police soon arrived to restore order.CP had planned to petition college authorities regarding campus issues like ragging and a drinking water crisis. Hundreds of CP supporters gathered with flags around 2 pm. Alongside CP district functionaries, Choudhury was present. However, ABVP members arrived, raised slogans against outsiders, blocked CP members and forcibly shut the gate, triggering the clash.CP district president Asif Sk said, “We were forcibly blocked at the gate by ABVP goons.” Choudhury, trying to pacify CP workers, said, “Nothing should be enforced through violence.”ABVP functionary Subhajit Malakar said, “We will not allow political interference on campus… Why are outsiders and politicians being brought in?” Police eventually intervened to separate the groups.
