COIMBATORE: Coimbatore corporation school student Ilamaran Selva Vinayagam has made a major move in his chess journey by obtaining a FIDE ID after competing in the Pudukkottai FIDE Rating Chess Tournament Below 1700, held from Aug 14 to 16. FIDE ID is a unique personal identification number assigned by the International Chess Federation to track a chess player’s ratings, tournament history and titles.Ilamaran, who represented Coimbatore at the tournament with the support of the city corporation, scored 4.5 points out of 9. The tournament was listed on the All India Chess Federation calendar as a FIDE-rated event.His achievement is being attributed to the Sigaram64 Smart AI Chess Training Programme, implemented in corporation schools by Chess Bishop Coaching Services LLP. More than 300 students are currently undergoing training under the programme. The initiative aims at providing corporation-school students with structured chess coaching and opportunities to compete at district, state and higher levels. It combines conventional coaching with technology-enabled learning and performance tracking.Ilamaran is among a growing number of corporation-school students who have progressed to FIDE-rated competition through the programme. Earlier, students like Sreenidhi and Heenamol had earned international FIDE ratings.Corporation commissioner Katta Ravi Teja recently felicitated Ilamaran and other students who took part in the competition.
