UDHAGAMANDALAM: A physical director at a private college in Coimbatore has been arrested on charges of raping a female assistant professor after luring her to Ooty on a leisure trip under the false promise of marriage.The arrested physical director has been identified as Kumaresan, 33, a native of Karur district. He became acquainted with a female assistant professor here. Over time, their friendship turned into a romantic relationship.A few months ago, Kumaresan promised to marry her and took her on a trip to Ooty. They stayed together in a room at a lodge, where he raped her after promising to marry her.Following the trip, both returned to Coimbatore. Shortly after, arrangements for Kumaresan’s marriage to another woman were initiated by his family. And he actively participated in the process. Shocked by this development, the assistant professor confronted Kumaresan, leading to an argument. Unable to offer a satisfactory explanation, Kumaresan eventually stated that he could not marry her because they belonged to two different castes.She then filed a complaint with the Coimbatore police. The complaint was transferred to the Ooty all women police station. On the orders of the Nilgiris superintendent of police S Brinda, a team of police conducted an investigation, following which Kumaresan was booked under relevant sections for sexual assault and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody on Monday.
