Ahmedabad: A 43-year-old Indian Coast Guard jawan allegedly attempted suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle at the Coast Guard Officers’ Mess near Gayatri Temple in Sector 1, Gandhinagar, on Sunday morning. He sustained a gunshot injury in the neck and his condition is critical.The jawan, Hasmukh Prajapati, a native of Lekawada village, was first taken to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital and then referred to a private hospital in Ahmedabad for advanced treatment.According to police, Prajapati was posted at Lekawada and had come to the officers’ mess for breakfast when the incident occurred. He was deployed on security duty at the Coast Guard office.The sound of the gunshot triggered panic among Coast Guard personnel, following which staff members rushed to the spot and alerted the police. A forensic team examined the scene and collected evidence.A police officer said Prajapati fired at his neck with his rifle in an apparent suicide attempt. “His condition is critical, and he has been shifted for specialised treatment,” the officer said.Police sources said preliminary inquiries did not indicate any harassment or workplace-related issues. Police suspect domestic discord may have prompted the extreme step, though they stressed that the exact reason is yet to be established.
