New Delhi: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar resigned from the legislative council on Monday, paving the way for the formation of a new state government. Minister Vijay Choudhary and JDU MLC Sanjay Gandhi submitted the resignation letter signed by Kumar before Bihar Legislative Council Chairman Awadhesh Narain Singh.

On March 16, Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha. As per rules, no person can remain a member of two Houses after 14 days of election. Kumar continues to be the CM and he can remain in the post for six months without being elected to the assembly or legislative council. However, with his resignation as MLC, NDA will move forward to form a new government .

NDA sources told ET that the process for the new government formation will start once Kumar steps down as CM. The NDA leaders will hold a meeting to discuss the Cabinet formula among themselves. ET had reported earlier that the next CM will be from BJP.
