Kanpur: Monsoon showers brought respite from Kanpur’s sweltering weather on Monday as light to moderate rain lashed the city in two spells, lowering temperatures after a humid and oppressive day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across the Kanpur division over the next five days.As predicted by the IMD, light to moderate rainfall occurred during the afternoon and evening, providing much-needed relief from the prevailing sultry conditions. According to the weather observatory, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 34°C and a minimum of 26.8°C, almost unchanged from Sunday’s readings. However, with relative humidity touching 91%, residents continued to experience uncomfortable weather until the afternoon.The sky remained overcast from early morning, with only a brief spell of sunshine lasting around 10 minutes before thick clouds enveloped the city again. Around 2.30 pm, light showers swept across several parts of the city, bringing down the mercury by nearly 2°C. The weather observatory recorded around 2 mm of rainfall during this spell. Another round of light rain began around 5 pm, and intermittent showers continued across the city through the evening.The slow-moving south-westerly winds, blowing at speeds between 3.1 kmph and 6.7 kmph, failed to provide much relief from the humidity before the rainfall.Weather expert SN Sunil Pandey of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology (CSA) said there was a high probability of thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds of 30-40 kmph, lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall at several places in the city over the next three hours.He said that increasing atmospheric moisture and the formation of new weather systems are expected to keep the Kanpur division under cloudy skies from July 28 to August 2. During this period, isolated areas may experience strong surface winds, scattered light drizzle, and light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.Pandey added that intermittent sunshine is also likely over the coming days, which, coupled with high atmospheric moisture, will continue to create humid conditions despite periodic rainfall.The IMD has issued a similar forecast, stating that cloudy skies, light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are likely across all districts of the Kanpur division over the next five days, from July 28 to August 1, owing to active monsoon conditions. The department has also warned that high atmospheric moisture will keep humidity levels elevated throughout the period.
