Nagpur: The Nagpur city police have submitted a detailed report to state govt listing ten offences registered during the recent protest period, when Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) had taken the nation by storm with its high-voltage agitation in Delhi followed by its protests across India, including Nagpur.Crucially, police sources confirmed that none of the ten cases were linked to CJP or students associated with the party.City police have furnished comprehensive details to enable govt to take an appropriate call on the matter, said an official.According to police sources, of the ten offences registered in the city, six were against Congress supporters. One case was registered against a BJP-affiliated youth wing group, while three involved other entities, including two pertaining to activists who had initiated protests at their personal level and had no connection with Cockroach Janata Party.“In Maharashtra, there is a trend to withdraw cases related to political protests, especially if the damage to the public property is not substantial crossing Rs5 lakh,” said a senior official. “Nagpur police have sent detailed reports on the cases registered during the protest period. Whether these cases can be withdrawn or not will be decided by the state govt following the Supreme court guidelines,” the official clarified.Senior police officials emphasised that the exercise was undertaken to present a clear and factual picture before govt, ensuring transparency in the handling of protest-related incidents. “The report only deals with the registered offences which on the other hand establishes that the CJP or its student wings were not involved in any of the cognisable offences registered during this period,” a senior officer told TOI on condition of anonymity. “Most offences in Nagpur city were pertaining to unlawful assembly. There was no violence from any side or any untoward incident,” said the official.In a related development, Nagpur rural police registered two separate offences, both at Ramtek police station. One case pertains to forwarding fake news, while the other involves spreading false information through a banner in public regarding the death of a woman at Jantar Mantar, which was later found to be untrue. Notably, Nagpur rural police did not register any offences during the five specific days when CJP’s protest was in full swing in Delhi.The protests, which drew massive national attention, saw participation from various political groups and independent activists across the country, including Maharashtra.In Nagpur, the law enforcement agencies maintained a close vigil to prevent any untoward incidents while upholding the right to peaceful demonstration.City police officials have been coordinating with state govt and higher authorities following Supreme Court’s observations, it’s learnt. The apex court had directed authorities to exercise restraint and adopt a lenient approach towards students, particularly in cases involving minor infractions during the agitations.“The detailed report is expected to guide the government’s future course of action, balancing law and order with judicial directives,” said another official.As state govt reviews the document, further clarity on potential actions or closures in these cases is awaited, said an official.
