Chennai: Residents of the city may face heat stress and continued discomfort this month as summer sets in, with IMD forecasting intense heatwave conditions for at least six to eight days between April and June. While rising temperatures may dominate, intermittent rainfall could offer brief relief across parts of the state, including Chennai.The heat risk comes as election campaigns gather pace ahead of the April 23 polling. The weather agency has advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to heat.In its seasonal outlook, IMD has forecast normal to above-normal maximum temperatures during April-June and mostly above-normal minimum temperatures across TN. Meteorologists said heat wave days are likely over parts of northern and coastal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, and isolated interior regions, leading to periods of heat stress.“Overall, the month is expected to be warmer than usual, with intermittent relief from rainfall, but continued heat-related discomfort,” said V R Durai, director, area cyclone warning centre. “Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to heat, and follow official weather updates,” he addedIn April, daytime temperatures in the city are expected to average around 34.7°C, while nights may warm to about 26.9°C. This comes ahead of peak summer in May, when maximum temperatures typically climb to around 37.3°C. The rising heat may also trigger convective rainfall, with April usually recording about 14mm, increasing to around 43mm in May.A heat wave is declared when the maximum temperature reaches at least 40°C in plains (30°C in hilly regions) or when it is 4.5°C to 6.4°C above normal for at least two consecutive days across a meteorological subdivision.“On Wednesday, the city and the suburbs may experience dry weather, with maximum temperatures around 34-35°C and minimum temperatures at 25-26°C,” an IMD bulletin said.
