Thiruvananthapuram: The city gas distribution project spearheaded by THINK Gas is rapidly transforming the energy landscape in the state capital, significantly expanding access to cleaner and safer fuels for households and vehicles. The initiative, driven by an extensive piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure rollout, is expected to provide a sustainable alternative to traditional liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders and diesel.According to data from the implementing company, THINK Gas has laid around 591km of pipeline across the district as part of the main gas distribution network, backed by an estimated investment of Rs 700 crore. This network forms the backbone of the city’s gas grid and already supports tens of thousands of connections across densely populated urban areas, as well as expanding suburban belts. According to official figures, the expanded pipeline system enabled over 16,000 PNG connections to homes and businesses within the city corporation limits, including commercial establishments and industrial units. THINK Gas officials said the expansion aligns with broader national and state goals to boost natural gas adoption as part of India’s energy transition. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has authorised city gas projects in over 300 geographical areas across the country, targeting millions of PNG connections by 2032 and promoting greater use of low-emission fuels nationwide. To support vehicles shifting to cleaner fuels, THINK Gas plans to commercialise four additional CNG stations in the district by March 2026. The region already hosts multiple operational CNG outlets, complemented by high-capacity liquefied compressed natural gas plants, such as the one at Thonnakkal, which help maintain a steady supply as the network grows.
