Kanpur: Residents of the city continued to reel under sultry weather conditions on Tuesday as intermittent cloud cover and bright sunshine prevailed throughout the day. The maximum temperature was recorded at 32.8°C, 1.4 degrees higher than Monday’s 31.4°C. The minimum temperature also rose and settled at 25.2°C. The CSA weather observatory recorded maximum relative humidity at 85%.North-westerly winds blew at a low speed of around 5.8 kmph, providing little relief from the humid conditions. The observatory also recorded 1.8 mm of rainfall in isolated pockets during the past 24 hours.According to SN Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, partly to heavily cloudy skies are likely to prevail over the next five days, with the possibility of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds at some places. Humidity levels are expected to rise whenever sunshine breaks through the clouds.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast partly cloudy skies with the possibility of light rain or thundershowers at isolated places across all six districts of the Kanpur division—Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Etawah, Auraiya, Kannauj and Farrukhabad– during the next 24 hours.Pandey said the reduction in cloud cover over large parts of the country and declining humidity levels over North India were primarily linked to the impact of a strong El Niño and weakening monsoon activity.Recent satellite images indicate that nearly 90% of the country is currently clear of clouds. However, meteorologists said this should only be viewed as an indication of weakening monsoon activity and cannot yet be officially termed the withdrawal of the monsoon.Air quality remains in a good category Meanwhile, Kanpur’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 50 on Tuesday, one point higher than Monday’s reading. Despite the marginal rise, the city’s air quality remained in the good category. The major pollutants recorded were carbon monoxide (CO) and PM10.
