Nagpur: As drought looms, citizens have urged Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to prioritise the revival of Pandhrabodi Lake, which has shrunk significantly over the years.Nagpur Ploggers, a group working for the lake’s conservation, recently met NMC commissioner Vipin Itankar and submitted a memorandum seeking a comprehensive revival plan.A key demand is to restore the natural flow of rainwater from surrounding catchment areas into the lake. Citizens have also sought an assessment of obstructions in the water channels and improvements to existing drainage structures. The group has called for the removal of accumulated silt, plastic waste and invasive vegetation, including water hyacinth, using appropriate machinery and environmental safeguards. It has also sought inspections of the lake’s banks and embankments, with strengthening wherever necessary, along with protective barriers and regular monitoring to prevent further dumping. The memorandum stresses the need to preserve historical wells and other heritage structures within the lake complex. Citizens have also called for a permanent system for regular cleaning, security and maintenance after the rejuvenation work is completed.“We want the NMC officials to visit and inspect the lake along with us, and brainstorm a sustainable maintenance mechanism for the water body,” said founder Suraj Shrivastava. After the commissioner assured them that prompt action would be taken, citizens expressed hope that concrete measures would follow soon.
